Exercise classes in Leicester
One evening a week in Leicester, all levels in the same room, everybody working at their own pace. Come as you are, go at your speed, and feel the difference by Christmas.
weeks is about when you start noticing it in ordinary life.
Come once a week, stay with the same handful of movements, add a little each time. That's the whole method. It isn't clever, but it's the thing that works, and by December you'll notice things you weren't even looking for.
More in the tank through the week. Better sleep. Feeling steadier and stronger in yourself. Those are the things people notice first, long before anything else changes.
The Wednesday hour is the session. The plan is what makes twelve of them add up.
Same class, same room, same hour. The only difference is whether you get the plan.

Book a placeEVERY WEDNESDAY
Rushey Mead, Leicester
6:30pm to 7:30pm. Twelve weeks from 16 September, then again in the new year. I'll send you the exact address when you book.
One class a week, same night, same time. Put it in the diary once and you're done deciding.
Easy to reach from Rushey Mead, Birstall, Thurmaston, Syston, Hamilton, Belgrave, Evington, Oadby and Glenfield.
Every level. Picking it back up after a while off, keeping ticking over, or already training and after a session that pushes you. There's a version of the hour for all three, and I'll make sure you're on the right one.
Ages are mixed on purpose. Twenties next to sixties, and it works, because everyone goes at their own pace and nobody is trying to keep up with the person beside them.
This is for anyone who wants to stay fit and healthy, feel good about themselves, and enjoy the hour while they're doing it.
Move a bit more and you sleep better. Sleep better and you eat better. Eat better and you've got the energy to move. It's a loop, and once it's turning your way it does a lot of the work for you.
The hour is the easiest place to start it turning. We look after the rest of it as we go, so you leave with more than a workout.
A proper hour. You'll work, you'll sweat, and you'll leave feeling better than when you walked in.
Everything has an easier version and a harder one, so you set your own level and change it whenever you like. Nobody is watching what you're lifting and nobody is keeping score.
And you'll always know where you're going. Every week builds on the last, so the effort you put in stays with you rather than starting over.
This comes with the twelve weeks, not with a drop in. It's your twelve weeks written out before you start, so you walk in knowing what you're doing and leave knowing whether it worked.
You answer about a dozen questions first — what you're after, where you're starting from, anything that hurts or that you'd rather not do. Your plan comes back with your numbers in it, not the room's, and with the awkward bits already worked around.
I read every one before it's sent. I'm using software to do the typing, not the thinking. If it's put you somewhere your shoulder won't like, I change it. Nothing lands in your inbox that I haven't looked at.
It's training only. No calorie counting, no meal plans, no weigh-ins. What you do, not what you weigh.
"The hardest mountain to climb is the one within."
That's me somewhere in the Himalaya, a long way from a sports hall in Leicester. I got there the same way anyone gets anywhere. One week at a time, starting from not being able to.
I'm Devang Valand. I've coached in Leicester for years, mostly with people who'd never call themselves sporty. People coming back after an injury, after a baby, after a decade of meaning to.
What I've learned is that the training is the easy part. The hard bit is the part nobody sees, which is turning up on a wet Wednesday in November when the sofa is right there. So that's what I build around.
I also work with Leicester City Council on getting more people in this city moving.

I work with Leicester City Council and Active Leicester on the Let's Get Moving campaign, getting more people across the city active — whatever their age or starting point.
It's the same belief that runs through the classes. The barrier is almost never fitness. It's knowing where to start, and having somewhere to turn up to.

That's most of the room. You won't be the only one starting again, and nobody is keeping score.
I've got a bad back, a dodgy knee, a condition.
Tell me on the form and I'll work round it. If your GP has told you to be careful with exercise, have that conversation with them first — then come and we'll sort the rest.
Do I need to be strong already?
No. You get strong by coming, not before you come. And if you're already strong, there's plenty here to push into.
What do I bring?
Trainers, water, something you can move in. I've got the kit.
Can I try before I commit to a block?
Yes — drop in for £7. If you take the block afterwards, I'll knock that £7 off.
What level is it?
All of them. Everything has an easier version and a harder one, so you set your own level and change it week to week, whether that means taking it steady or going hard.
Is it mixed?
Yes, all ages and abilities, and there are changing rooms on site.
Easiest thing is the form — it tells me what I need to know before you turn up. But if you'd rather just ask something, do.
